Scholarship Opportunities for Students:

South Yuba River Citizens League 
Environmentalist of the Year Scholarship Opportunity:
The Environmentalist of the Year Scholarship, administered by South Yuba River Citizens League (SYRCL), is offered annually in the summer to graduating high school seniors that have demonstrated a commitment to the environment.
 
SYRCL has offered this $4,000 scholarship ($1,000/year for four years) annually to local students since 2002.
Scholarship monies are sent directly to the recipient’s college or university and can be applied toward tuition or fees.
The following are requirements to apply:
  • You must be a student of a high school in either Nevada County, Yuba County, or Sierra County
  • Minimum 3.0 G.P.A.
  • Commitment to pursue an environmentally-related degree
  • Two letters of recommendation (at least one of which is from a teacher, coach, or mentor)
  • Demonstrated community leadership, extra-curricular activity, environmental volunteerism
  • Need is a consideration in awarding this scholarship
  • Preference will be given to students with a history of volunteering at SYRCL, but is not required to receive this award

Elks National Foundation Scholarship Opportunity:
Eligibility:
    • Current high school seniors, or the equivalent, who are citizens of the United States, are eligible to apply.
    • Applicants do not need to be related to a member of the Elks.
    • High school graduates are not eligible to apply.
    • Applicants must be citizens of the United States on the date their applications are submitted; permanent legal resident status does not qualify.
    • Scholarships are available only to students who enroll in four-year undergraduate degree programs at accredited U.S. American colleges or universities

✅ Junior and Sophomore Scholarship Prep To-Do List 

📚 Academic Preparation

  • Do your best in your classes — not all scholarships are GPA-based, but putting in effort and showing growth matters. 
  • Build strong relationships with teachers — they can offer guidance and write recommendation letters later.

🧠 Skill Development

  • Practice writing essays through English class or journaling.
  • Work on time management — balancing school, activities, and responsibilities.

🌟 Extracurricular Involvement

  • Join clubs, sports, or organizations — depth and leadership over time look great.
  • Track activities and achievements — keep a running list for later use.

💖 Community Service

  • Find a volunteer activity you care about and stick with it.
  • Start logging hours and impact — time, duties, lessons learned, etc.

👩‍💼 Personal Branding

  • Start a resume or brag sheet — list honors, awards, work experience, etc.
  • Identify passions and strengths — what do you care about? What comes naturally?

📚 Scholarship Awareness

  • Start a scholarship folder (digital or paper) with:
    • Interesting scholarships you hear about
    • Deadlines (set reminders for future years)
    • Essay prompts (some repeat yearly)
  • Look into local scholarship foundations or programs now — they often support students early.

💬 Mentorship and Support

  • Meet with your school counselor and let them know you're interested in scholarships.
  • Ask older students about their scholarship experiences.

💻 Online Presence (Optional but Helpful)

  • Create a professional email address.
  • Clean up social media — scholarship committees may check.

✍️ Personal Writing Practice

  • Draft reflections on:
    • Your background and goals
    • A challenge you've overcome
    • What you want to study or do with your life
  • These will evolve, but they will help with scholarship essays later.

🔍 Financial Aid Basics

  • Learn about FAFSA and financial aid terms early.
